September 05, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Knoxville, Tenn. - UCLA recorded its sixth shutout in seven games, playing to a 0-0 tie at Tennessee. Graduate student Ryan Campbell was outstanding in goal, making a season-high six saves, including one final save in the final seconds.
ย
UCLA (5-1-1) outshot the Volunteers, 16-7, and had an 11-4 advantage in the second half but had several outside shots miss just wide or had shots stopped by Tennessee goalkeeper Ally Zazzara, who finished with five saves.
ย
Tennessee (3-1-2) applied pressure early in the game, but Campbell came up big each time, making a save in the second minute and then coming up with a huge diving 1v1 save after a Reese Mattern steal in the ninth. Campbell also had another save in traffic following a corner kick in the 36th minute.
ย
The Bruins' best opportunity in the first half came in the 11th minute, when defender Paloma Daubert came up from the back to take a shot from outside the box that was tipped out by Zazzara.
ย
The second half saw more offensive pressure from the Bruins. Ayo Oke, returning from injury that had her miss the last four games, fired off a shot that missed just wide in the 48th minute. She had another attempt in the 65th minute from just outside the box that narrowly went wide. Meg Boade also had a good look at goal in the 67th minute, but her shot from outside the box was wide right. Alice Barbieri had three good strikes from long distance in the final 10 minutes but just missed the target, and Jordan Geis' shot from inside the box in the 83rd minute was stopped by Zazzara.
ย
Campbell and the Bruin defense made important stops in the second half as well. Campbell dove for a save in the 50th minute and made another stop on a Macaira Midgley shot in the 58th minute. The Volunteers had a good opportunity on a corner kick in the 70th minute, but Quincy McMahon cleared it out before the shot opportunity. Jayden Perry also disrupted a shot a minute later. And in the waning seconds, Campbell deftly handled a shot from Sarah Bridenstine.
