September 08, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Lexington, Ky. - No. 9 UCLA allowed goals on a penalty kick and a free kick in a 2-0 loss to unbeaten Kentucky on Sunday.
With many offensive pieces unavailable due to injury or National Team duty, UCLA was shut out for the third consecutive game. The Bruins (5-2-1) outshot the Wildcats (7-0) by a 15-11 count, but had just three shots on goal, all in the final 20 minutes.
Both of Kentucky's goals came as a result of fouls. The Wildcats scored the first goal on a penalty kick in the 17th minute. After Makala Woods made a run in the box, Bruin goalkeeper Ryan Campbell came off her line to challenge but was unable to prevent contact, as Woods earned the penalty kick, which she successfully converted.
The Bruins had two good looks in the 33rd minute, but the attempts at an equalizer were blocked by Kentucky's defense. A minute later, Maya Evans set up Lily Boyden with a great through ball, but Boyden's one-time shot went just high.
Kentucky's second goal was scored in the 64th minute following a foul outside the box. Graduate transfer Catherine DeRosa curled her shot around the Bruin wall and past Campbell for her first goal as a Wildcat.
UCLA had a few opportunities to chip away at the lead. In the 71st minute, Jayden Perry's shot off a corner kick went wide. Taylor Cheatham recorded the Bruins' first shot on goal in the 73rd minute on a shot that was saved by Marz Josephson. Cheatham missed wide on another shot in the 76th minute. Avery Robinson was saved in the 85th minute, and Perry had another shot saved in the 88th minute.
The Bruins will begin Big Ten Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Oregon.
