No. 1 UCLA Concludes Triton Invitational with 4-0 Record

SAN DIEGO --ย The top-ranked Bruins (4-0) earned another pair of victories on Sunday to concludeย the Triton Invitational with an unblemished record. The Bruins began the day with a 24-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer (0-4) in theย morning and then defeated the hosts, No. 12 UC San Diego (3-1), 15-7, in the eveningย atย Canyonview Aquatic Center. The Bruins improved to 14-0 in the series history against the Sagehens and to 62-1 against the Tritons.Against Pomona-Pitzer, aย total of 12 different Bruins scored in the game, paced by a career-high five goals from Pepperdine graduate transfer Nico Tierney. Freshman Ryder Dodd scored a game-high eight points (three goals and five assists) while super senior Jack Larsen netted his first hat trick of the season. Another four Bruinsย scored multiple goals as UC Davis graduate transfer Aaron Voggenthaler, redshirt junior Trey Doten, sophomore Wade Sherlock, and freshman Peter Castillo each scored twice against the Sagehens.
Super senior Garret Griggsย got the start in the cage and played the majority of the game, tallying two saves and two steals while giving up four goals. Redshirt freshman Nate Tauscher came on in relief and made one save without allowing a goal.
The Bruins led 5-1 at the end ofย the first quarter and 10-2 at halftime. UCLA led 17-4 heading into the final stanza and then posted a 7-0 shutout in the fourth to provide the 24-4 final.

In the nightcap against UCSD, aย total of nine different Bruins scored in the game, paced by the first collegiate hat trick for freshman Peter Castillo. Sophomore Ben Liechty led all players in scoring with seven points (two goals, five assists). Super senior Makoto Kenney was right behind with six total points (one goal, five assists). Three otherย Bruinsย scored multiple goals as UC Davis graduate transfer Aaron Voggenthaler, freshman Bode Brinkema, and freshman Ryder Dodd each scored twice against the Tritons.

The Bruins posted a shutout in two different quarters for the comfortable win. UCLA led wire-to-wire, including holding a 2-0 lead at the end of the first. UCLA extended its lead to 7-4 at halftime. An impressive 5-0 shutout in the third for the Bruins put the game out of reach as UCLA took a 12-4 lead into the final frame. The teams drew, 3-3, in the fourth period to provide the 15-7 final.
UP NEXT: The Bruins head to Orange County to face the sixth-ranked UC Irvine Anteaters at 1:00 p.m. PT on Friday, Sept. 13. UCLA then returns home to open its home slate against 17th-ranked California Baptist Universityย at 1:00 p.m. PT on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. Admission is free.
