IRVINE, Calif.ย --ย Top-ranked UCLA (5-0) continued its dominance over the Big West Conference with a 12-9 win atย No. 9 UC Irvine (2-3) on Friday afternoonย at Anteater Aquatics Complex. With the win, UCLA improved to 83-60-1 all-time against the Anteaters.

A total of nine different Bruins scored in the contest, paced by four points (two goals and two assists) from sophomore Wade Sherlock. Freshman Ryder Dodd and junior Chase Dodd, playing in his first game of the season, each scored two goals.

Graduate student Garret Griggsย got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying seven saves, one assist, and one steal while surrendering nine goals.

UC Irvine scored the first goal of the game on a power play (6:55), but the Bruins never trailed after that. Graduate transfer Aaron Voggenthaler tied it up at 1-1 with a power play score off a feed from Sherlock (4:40) and then the Bruins' other graduate transfer, Nico Tierney, scored from the front court (0:06) to put UCLA up 2-1 and the Bruins were never threatened after that.

The Bruins won the second quarter, 4-3, to take a 6-4 lead into the break. Four different Bruins scored in the period with sophomore Marcell Szécsi scoring his first goal of the year in his first game back (6:31). Sherlock (4:51) and Ryder Dodd (3:04) each scored to stretch the Bruins' consecutive scoring streak to five goals for a 5-1 lead. UCI called timeout and scored an immediate goal (2:39), but Chase Dodd answered (2:15) off a feed from sophomore Ben Liechty's first of three assists to push the lead to 6-2. The Anteaters scored the final two goals of the period.

UCLA won the third period, 3-2, to build a 9-6 lead heading in the final stanza. Chase Dodd opened the scoring with his second goal of the game (6:23) and then freshman Bode Brinkema followed with his first (5:50) of the game to double up the Anteaters, 8-4. Both teams would trade goals after that with Ryder Dodd netting his second on a power play (2:50) to put UCLA up 9-5. UCI scored the final goal of the period on a penalty shot (1:11).

The two teams settled for a 3-3 drawn in the fourth period to provide the 12-9 final. Sherlock netted his second of the game to open the scoring (6:49). After UC Irvine scored back-to-back goals to cut it to 10-8, super senior Makoto Kenney scored his first off a feed from Liechtyย (4:56) to give the Bruins some breathing room. Another Anteater goal cut the Bruins' lead to 11-9 (2:36). UCLA played stellar defense down the stretch, getting two steals, and then scored at the buzzer on a 7-on-6 play by super senior Jack Larsen for his first goal of the game to end the scoring.
