January 18, 2025 | Gymnastics

College Park, Md. – UCLA recorded a 197.550 team score for the second consecutive week to earn its first-ever Big Ten Conference win at Maryland, 197.550-194.850, in front of a record crowd of 7,287. Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles earned the Bruins' first perfect 10 of the season, on uneven bars in the first rotation. Chiles won the all-around in her first all-around turn of the year, scoring 39.500.

"It was a really fun place to compete today," said The R.C. Rothman UCLA Head Gymnastics Coach Janelle McDonald. "The crowd was great, and the energy in the room was really awesome. It was a great place to be for our first Big Ten competition. I'm really proud of the team. They were really resilient in moments and really showed the consistency we've been working on in the gym."

The Bruins kicked off their meet with a solid score of 49.325 on uneven bars, led by Chiles' 10.0, Frida Esparza's 9.900 and Macy McGowan's 9.850. The 10 by Chiles puts the junior into a tie for No. 6 on UCLA's all-time list for perfect 10s with nine. Only two other Bruins have ever scored more 10s on bars than Chiles, who has scored five – Kyla Ross (11) and Jamie Dantzscher (7).

In rotation two, UCLA received season-high marks from its first three vaulters. Emily Lee led off with a 9.850, followed by a 9.875 by Brooklyn Moors and a 9.900 by Chae Campbell on a stuck Yurchenko full. The Bruins finished with a team score of 49.150, while Maryland gained a little bit of ground with a 49.250 on bars, led by Sierra Kondo's 9.950.

With a 98.475-98.200 led at the halfway point, the Bruins began to pull away after scoring 49.525 on floor exercise in the third rotation. Emma Malabuyo began a string of five consecutive scores of 9.850 of higher, followed by McGowan's season-high 9.900. Moors contributed her second consecutive 9.950, and Campbell earned a 9.875. Chiles closed the rotation with a 9.950, tying Moors for the event victory.

UCLA finished strong on balance beam in the final rotation, scoring a national-best 49.550 on the event. All six competitors earned season-high marks, starting with Lee's leadoff 9.925. Chiles, who was a late add into the lineup, competed on beam for the first time this season and scored 9.775. Campbell earned a 9.900, Moors scored 9.850, and Alipio added a 9.900. Malabuyo nearly ended the meet on a perfect note for the Bruins, earning a 10 from one judge and a final score of 9.975.

The Bruins will return to Los Angeles for two straight home meets, on Saturday, Jan. 25 vs. Illinois and on Saturday, Feb. 1 vs. Michigan State. Tickets for both meets are on sale now at www.uclabruins.com/tickets.
