No. 21 Men's Tennis Outlasted by No. 13 Texas A&M in Boston

January 25, 2025 | Men's Tennis

BOSTON โ€“ The 21st-ranked UCLA men's tennis team was outlasted by No. 13 Texas A&M 4-3 in ITA Kickoff Weekend play at Harvard's Murr Center Saturday.

The Bruins (1-2) claimed the doubles point before falling behind 3-1 in singles play. They answered with a pair of singles wins to tie the score, but JC Roddick prevailed in the deciding contest for the Aggies (2-0). UCLA will look to bounce back Sunday at 7 a.m. PT, when it faces Georgia in the consolation match.

In a top-50 matchup on the first doubles court, No. 48 Luke Casper/Togan Tokac of Texas A&M beat No. 10 Alexander Hoogmartens/Aadarsh Tripathi 6-1. The Bruins answered emphatically, however, starting with a 6-3 win by Kaylan Bigun and Rudy Quan against Tiago Pires and Matthis Ross on Court 3. Moments later, Spencer Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels downed Roddick and Theo Papamalamis 6-2 on Court 2 to break the tie.

Perego answered in singles play, dispatching of No. 93 Tripathi 6-2, 6-2 on Court 6. The Aggies took their first lead of the day when Papamalamis downed No. 13 Johnson 6-3, 6-1 on the top court and doubled the advantage thanks to Casper's 6-4, 6-3 victory opposite Bigun on Court 3.

UCLA did not go quietly, though, as No. 82 van Loben Sels started the comeback by taking down Pires 6-2, 6-3 on Court 4. With his 11th win of the campaign, van Loben Sels matched Johnson for the team lead. Hoogmartens then leveled the overall score by beating Tokac 6-4, 6-3 on Court 5, turning all eyes toward Court 2.

The only three-set decision of the day came in the dual match's only ranked showdown. In the end, it was No. 60 Roddick getting the best of No. 50 Quan 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

The Bruns will next be facing a Georgia team that suffered a 4-2 loss to 23rd-ranked host Harvard Saturday.
