No. 21 Men's Tennis Rebounds to Beat Georgia 4-2

BOSTON โ The 21st-ranked UCLA men's tennis team picked up a 4-2 win against Georgia in Sunday's ITA Kickoff Weekend consolation match at Harvard's Murr Center. Spencer Johnson clinched the victory, prevailing in a second-set tiebreaker.
The Bruins (2-2) bounced back after dropping the doubles point in a tiebreaker, taking five singles first sets. Alexander Hoogmartens, Rudy Quan, Aadarsh Tripathi and Johnson all ultimately prevailed in straight sets. Miguel Perez Peña of the Bulldogs (2-2) made the final count 4-2 after closing out his win simultaneously with Johnson.
Freddy Blaydes and Oscar Pinto Sansao of Georgia teamed in doubles to beat Quan and Kaylan Bigun 6-2 on Court 3 for the day's first result. UCLA recovered on Court 1, where No. 10 Hoogmartens/Tripathi outlasted No. 14 Ryan Colby/Thomas Paulsell 7-5. The ranked win represented a season best for the Bruin pair, which felled two other nationally-ranked tandems in the fall en route to All-America designation. That left the point to be won on Court 2, where Perez Peña and Niels Ratiu outlasted Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels 7-6(3).
In the five singles first sets claimed by UCLA, no Bulldog won more than three games. Hoogmartens took his by a 6-1 count before holding off No. 125 Pinto Sansano for a 6-1, 7-5 decision on Court 5. No. 93 Tripathi also seized six of seven first-set games on Court 6 and eventually gave the Bruins their first lead of the day with his 6-1, 6-3 victory opposite Gabriele Vulpitta.
No. 50 Quan registered the best ranked win of his young career, defeating No. 53 Colby 6-2, 6-3 on Court 2. Then, just as No. 44 Perez Peña held off Bigun 7-5, 6-4 on Court 3, Johnson won his top-20 duel on the top court. The 13th-ranked Johnson improved his career mark against nationally-ranked foes to 13-4, handing No. 16 Paulsell a 6-2, 7-6(3) loss. Johnson had never bested a player ranked better than No. 31 until Sunday's decider.
Next up for the Bruins are visits to Los Angeles Tennis Center from former Pac-12 Conference mates California and Stanford. UCLA hosts Cal Saturday, Feb. 1 at 12 p.m. PT and the No. 18 Cardinal stops in the next day for another noon start.
