Women’s Golf Opens Spring Season in Palos Verdes

January 30, 2025 | Women's Golf

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women's golf team opens the Spring 2025 season at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge, hosted at Palos Verdes Golf Club from Sunday, Feb. 2 through Tuesday, Feb. 4. Spectators are welcome as the tournament is open to the public.

The three-day, 54-hole stroke play event features 16 programs. Tee times will begin at 9 a.m. (PT) on both Sunday and Monday and there will be an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.

"It's great to be back competing after a three-month break!" said UCLA head coach Alicia Um Holmes. "We're heading down the road to the South Bay and it almost feels like a home event because of its close proximity. We've got six of our Bruins traveling to the tournament and I'm curious to see how they'll handle this challenging course. Palos Verdes Golf Club requires sharp ball striking skills, great course management and touch on the greens. On top of that, it tests your patience and resiliency. It's a great track and it will expose any weaknesses in our games. I'm really looking forward to this opportunity to test ourselves this weekend!"

History at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge
UCLA has hoisted the team trophy at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge, formerly known as the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, five times dating back to the 2003-04 season. The Bruins most recently won at the event in Spring 2018 with a score of +15, 867.

Individually, four Bruins have medaled at the Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, including current assistant coach Erynne (Lee) Yoo who won the title in Spring 2013 with a score of +1, 213. Lilia Vu, Bronte Law and Charlotte Mayorkas also claimed victories at the event.

Bruins at a Glance
Francesca Fiorellini, Tiffany Le and Canales were three of four Bruins to compete in all four tournaments in the fall season. Le leads UCLA entering 2025 with a 72.2 scoring average and is tied with Canales with four rounds under par. Canales has three top-20 finishes under her belt halfway through her senior season, including a season-best t-6th finish at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate where she shot a -4, 212.

Canales, Fiorellini to Compete at ANWA
Canales and Fiorellini will compete at the sixth edition of the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) this April 2-5 in Georgia. The first and second rounds of the ANWA will be held at Champions Retreat Golf Club. A cut will take place after 36 holes, advancing the leading 30 players and ties to the final round at Augusta National Golf Club. The ANWA, one of the women's golf's premier amateur events, will be nationally televised on Golf Channel.

This marks Fiorellini's second straight ANWA appearance and the first for Canales. Fiorellini, the top Italian amateur in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, tied for 30th at 9-over (67-78-80) at last year's event.

Campos Departs UCLA for Pro Ranks
Three-year UCLA letterwinner Zoe Antoinette Campos declared she will be embarking on her professional golf career after the Fall 2024 season. Campos leaves UCLA as one of the most accomplished golfers in program history, being named a two-time WGCA First Team All-American and All-Pac-12 First Team selection. Campos finished her career tied for fourth program history in wins (6), fifth in under par rounds (43), eighth in scoring average (72.52) and tied for ninth in top-10 finishes (19).

In Campos' last full season, she led UCLA with a 70.7 scoring average and four medals to help the Bruins to a runner-up finish at the 2024 NCAA Championships in Um Holmes' first year as head coach.

The B1G Day is Here
UCLA officially joined the Big Ten Conference Aug. 2, ushering in a new era in the Bruins' storied and illustrious athletic tradition. UCLA, along with previous conference foes Oregon, USC and Washington, have moved to an 18-team Big Ten Conference with a footprint spanning from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

UCLA's approaching membership in the Big Ten Conference was initially announced more than two years ago, on June 30, 2022.

"The day has finally come," said Martin Jarmond, The Alice and Nahum Lainer Family Director of Athletics. "After two years of planning and preparation, UCLA is proud and excited to join the Big Ten Conference. I am grateful for the energy and effort that has been put into shaping this pivotal move by our hard-working staff members, as well as our coaches and student-athletes. The investments we have made into our programs and student-athletes over the past 24 months have set us up to continue to compete at the elite level that defines UCLA Athletics."

Three of the Big Ten's newest members, UCLA (three), USC (three) and Washington (one), have combined for all seven of the conference's NCAA Women's Golf Championships.
