Bruins Tie Gophers, 0-0
October 12, 2025 | Women's Soccer
St. Paul, Minn. - Strong play at the goalkeeper position on both sides led to a 0-0 tie for No. 9 UCLA at Minnesota on Sunday afternoon. Bruin sophomore Mariangela Medina made seven saves on nine Gopher shots in her first collegiate start, and Minnesota redshirt sophomore Sarah Martin made a career-high 12 saves on 20 UCLA shots.
The shutout was UCLA's ninth of the season and Medina's first solo shutout of her career. Medina, who also has three combined shutouts, has not allowed a goal in 225 minutes of play. ย
UCLA had several good chances to score in the first half, getting off 10 shots but being stopped six times by Martin. Bella Winn had a header in the box saved by Martin in the 12th minute. In the 18th minute, Kara Croone ran down a long ball that was redirected by a Gopher defender, but her shot in the box was also stopped by Martin. UCLA had a pair of shots saved in the 21st minute, the first by Leena Powell at the right post, and the second, a screamer by Emma Egizii from outside the box that Martin leaped for to put out of play.
Medina made some big saves of her own in the half, the first coming in the 14th minute on a shot by Freya Jupp. Near the end of the first half, she held strong on a close-range shot by Tatiana Cunningham after a free kick.ย
Minnesota came out aggressive to start the second half, recording five shots in the first seven minutes. Medina saved a shot by Cunningham in the 47th minute, then Paige Kalal clanged a shot off the crossbar less than a minute later, followed by a wide shot by Cunningham. Medina made another save on the left side stop on the left side on a shot by Caroline Birdsell in the 50th minute and then cut off a shot by Freya Jupp in the 52nd minute.
The Bruins also created opportunities to score but were continually denied by Martin. Winn had shots in the box in the 56th and 60th minutes stopped by Martin. Croone had a shot saved in the 61st minute and then clipped the crossbar in the 65th. The Bruins had another opportunity a minute later in a scramble in the box, and the officials reviewed a potential penalty kick but determined that Croone was not fouled in the box. UCLA's 12 shots on goal were a season high.
UCLA will close out the regular season slate with three home games, including two next week against Iowa on Oct. 16 and Nebraska on Oct. 19 and the rivalry game against USC on Oct. 26. Tickets for the remaining three matches are on sale now at uclabruins.com/tickets.
