Bruins Suffer Defeat to No. 22 USC

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women's volleyball team suffered a defeat in straight sets to No. 22 USC on Wednesday night inside the Galen Center.
 
Set scores were 23-25, 23-25, 20-25.

Despite out-hitting USC .302 to .285, UCLA (12-9, 6-5 Big Ten) was unable contain the Trojans' (16-5, 7-4 Big Ten) balanced attack, as Adonia Faumuina (16 kills), London Wijay (11), and Abigail Mullen (11) each reached double-digit kills. The Bruins also struggled from the service line, committing 11 errors that proved costly throughout the match. 
 
UCLA suffered its first loss of the year when holding the edge in hitting percentage.
 
Maggie Li earned her second consecutive start and delivered another strong performance, reaching double-digit kills for the second straight match with 11 kills at a sharp .360 hitting percentage. Cheridyn Leverette matched her with 11 kills of her own, while Marianna Singletary added nine and Brooklyn Briscoe chipped in seven to round out a balanced Bruins attack.
 
Kate Duffey came close to a double-double, distributing 35 assists and collecting eight digs in a steady all-around effort.
 
On the defensive end, Lola Schumacher continued her consistent sophomore season, recording 12 digs for her 17th match with double-digit totals.
 
USC jumped out to a 7-3 lead, but UCLA clawed back behind key swings from Leverette and a momentum-shifting corner shot by Schumacher. Carly Hendrickson's service run and Li's kills helped the Bruins surge ahead 14-13, and another 4-0 run gave them a 19-17 edge. USC responded with a 3-0 run to retake the lead at 21-20. Leverette tied it at 21-all, but despite fending off one set point, a costly fifth service error handed the set to USC, 25-23.
 
UCLA started strong when Briscoe's back-to-back kills helped extend the lead to 7-4. A long rally capped by a Leverette kill and a Duffey's service run pushed the Bruins ahead 14-8. USC chipped away with two separate 3-0 runs, eventually taking a 17-16 lead. UCLA regained momentum briefly at 21-20, but another service error leveled the score. Singletary staved off set point, but USC closed it out 25-23.
 
The final set began evenly at 7-7 before USC edged ahead 11-9. Briscoe's kills kept UCLA close, but the Trojans built a 15-12 lead by the media timeout and extended it to 20-16. UCLA fought back with two gritty rally wins to make it 21-19, but USC finished strong, taking the set 25-20 and sealing the sweep.
 
The Bruins will return to Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Financial to host Washington on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. (PT). match will be available for viewing on B1G+.
