No. 4 UCLA Opens B1G Conference Play with Win over Oregon, 80-59

LOS ANGELES โ The No. 4-ranked UCLA Bruins start Big Ten play with an 80-59 win over the Oregon Ducks on Sunday afternoon.

The Bruins move to 9-1 (1-0 Big Ten) on the season and 4-0 inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Financial; UCLA outrebounded Oregon (10-1, 0-1 Big Ten) 52-29 Sunday.

Senior Lauren Betts dominated on both sides of the floor, finishing with 24 points, 14 rebounds, and a season-high five blocks. Graduate student Gianna Kneepkens added 17 points and three rebounds to the final tally. Freshman Lena Bilić scored 13 points in addition to her three rebounds and an assist.

Senior Kiki Rice finished with a season-high seven assists, while graduate student Charlisse Leger-Walker added eight assists and 10 rebounds of her own. Graduate student Angela Dugalić followed their lead on the boards with nine rebounds.

Leger-Walker started the game with an inside feed to Betts to score in the paint. Betts continued to find the basket, scoring a second-chance opportunity two minutes later off an assist by senior Gabriela Jaquez. Driving across at the 7:00 minute mark, Rice crossed down the court, finding Kneepkens in the paint for the layup. On the Bruins' next possession, Kneepkens drew her defender in with a pump fake, quickly stepping inside the 3-point line for a long two.

Staying hot, Rice found Kneepkens again on the right side, finishing the 3-pointer and giving her the seven-straight points for the Bruins. UCLA also made an impact on defense, with Betts recording two blocks and Leger-Walker recovering from a Bruin turnover to make an impressive two-versus-one block.

The Bruins finished the first quarter up 19-8. They held the Ducks scoreless for the first 3:40 of the game and shot 40 percent from the field. Kneepkens led the team with seven points, followed by Betts' six points and six rebounds. Jaquez added five points and three rebounds of her own to the scoreboard.

Betts showed pure domination to start the second quarter; after earning a quick lay-up, she made an impressive block on defense at the 8:24 mark, then got the ball to Rice, who fed it to freshman Lena Bilić for an easy 3-pointer. Shortly after another basket by Betts, Bilić hit another shot from distance, continuing the Bruins' 10-0 run and forcing Oregon to call a timeout. After redshirt-sophomore Amanda Muse added four points to the board, and Leger-Walker continued to make an impact; the Kiwi guard grabbed a steal on the other side of the court and took it to the basket herself, finishing a layup in the paint.

Bilić led the way in scoring in the second quarter, finishing three for three behind the arc to give her nine points. Kneepkens added five more points in the quarter to finish the half with 12 points and three rebounds. Rice went into the break with seven assists, her season-high for the year.
