No. 25 Men's Tennis Falls 4-2 Against California

LOS ANGELES โ The 25th-ranked UCLA men's tennis team was outlasted by California in a 4-2 decision Saturday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center. The top two singles courts went to third sets and the Golden Bears' Carl Emil Overbeck prevailed in clinching fashion.
Cal (5-0) took the doubles point by way of a tiebreaker, but the Bruins (2-3) responded by securing the first two singles points. The singles victories by Alexander Hoogmartens and Emon van Loben Sels were not enough, though, as Overbeck, Bernardo Munk Mesa and Timofey Stepanov were triumphant on the other side.
Playing together on Court 1 for the first time this season, the tandem of van Loben Sels and Spencer Johnson made the most of its opportunity. Facing off against No. 84 Alex Chang/Mikey Wright, the Bruins earned the contest's first break of serve in the final game for a 6-4 win. Cal answered, though, with No. 30 Overbeck/Theo Dean taking the last four games and providing the 6-3 equalizer versus No. 10 Hoogmartens/Aadarsh Tripathi on Court 2.
Gianluca Ballotta and Giacomo Revelli made their dual-match debuts on the third doubles court for UCLA and encountered a deciding tiebreaker in their match against Stepanov and Derrick Chen. It was ultimately the Golden Bears, securing the final four points of a 7-4 result, who prevailed.
The Bruins collected four singles first sets, with three of them decided by tiebreakers. Hoogmartens quickly followed his with a second, beating No. 102 Chen 6-3, 6-1 to even the overall score. The victory represented Hoogmartens' third in as many matches.
No. 93 van Loben Sels put UCLA in the lead with his career-best ranked win. The redshirt sophomore knocked off No. 32 Dean 6-4, 6-3 on Court 3 to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Bruins.
Cal moved back into the driver's seat thanks to a pair of decisions on the back courts. No. 110 Stepanov evened things up, defeating Revelli 6-4, 6-4 on Court 5. Munk Mesa then topped Ballotta 7-6(5), 6-4 on Court 6.
No. 13 Johnson and No. 66 Chang alternated tiebreaker wins on Court 2, with Chang forcing a third set that would be left unfinished. No. 4 Overbeck earned a break to lead 2-1 in his third set with No. 50 Quan and rode that to victory, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 up top.
The Bruins will have an opportunity to bounce back Sunday, when it hosts No. 13 Stanford. The UCLA women's team welcomes Cal to LATC for a 9 a.m. PT start. The men's match will begin one hour after completion of the women's match.
