
No. 3 UCLA MVB Sweeps No. 2 UC Irvine, 3-0

IRVINE, Calif. – The UCLA men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over No. 2 UC Irvine on Wednesday night inside the Bren Events Center on the campus of UC Irvine. Set scores were 25-22, 25-17, and 25-23.
Cameron Thorne, Cooper Robinson, and Sean McQuiggan all finished in double-digit kills on the night. Thorne tallied a career-high 15, Robinson added 11, and McQuiggan added a career-high 10.
In the win, McQuiggan tied the program record for highest hitting percentage in a single match. The redshirt junior finished with 10 kills on 10 attack attempts and became the second Bruin to ever hit 1.000 in a match. The only other Bruin to do so was J.R. Norris IV, who also went 10-for-10 back in 2022 against Morehouse.
As a team, UCLA hit .442 in the match, while McQuiggan hit 1.000 and Thorne hit. 579 to pace the Bruins offensively.
In the first set, the Anteaters opened up a 4-1 lead before the Bruins earned three points in a row to tie the set at 4-4 early on, courtesy of a McQuiggan block.
The squads traded points before Cooper Robinson slammed home a kill to put the Bruins up 10-9, and after the Bruins forced an attack error on the next point, Irvine called the first timeout of the match with the Bruins up 11-9.
UCLA's middles continued to provide the offense for much of the first set as McQuiggan and Thorne combined to put the Bruins up 20-18, before UCI retied the match at 20-20.
The Bruins promptly scored two points in a row with McQuiggan putting UCLA up 22-20, before Andrew Rowan dumped the ball over on the next point to put the Bruins up 23-20.
In the first set alone McQuiggan and Thorne combined for 10 kills, five each.
As for the second set, the Bruins struggled out of the gate, and UCI took a 9-5 lead before the Bruins earned nine of the next 12 points to take a 14-12 lead.
UCLA then extended the lead to 20-14 with a 6-2 run with Andrew Rowan at the service line for the majority of the run. The Bruins would run out comfortable winners in the second set a few points later and took the set 25-17, and took a 2-0 lead in the match headed to the third set.
The Bruins carried their momentum into the third set, and took a 9-5 lead courtesy of a Rowan kill. The Bruins then took a 21-15 lead via Thorne, who recorded his career-high 13th kill in the process.
UCI clawed their way back into the set and got within a point, 22-21, before Thorne stemmed the tied and earned his 14th kill of the match to put UCLA up 23-21. McQuiggan then ended the night with his 10th kill on his 10th swing to finish off the Anteaters 25-23, and earned the 3-0 sweep.
