Men's Tennis Falls 4-3 Against No. 25 USC
February 22, 2025 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss to crosstown rival USC in non-conference play Saturday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Alexander Hoogmartens, Rudy Quan and Emon van Loben Sels were victorious in singles play for the Bruins (2-6), but their wins were not enough. Karl Lee of the Trojans (6-3) prevailed in the day's final match. Matteo Morazzi and Nathan Trouve also won singles contests for USC, which also claimed the doubles point.
There was an all-freshman doubles matchup on Court 3, where Quan and Kaylan Bigun gave the Bruins an early edge. They broke the serve of Morazzi and Trouve for a 2-0 advantage and rode that to a 6-3 victory. Giacomo Revelli and Aadarsh Tripathi jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Court 2, but Trojans Volodymyr Iakubenko and Oscar Weightman answered by taking six of the next seven games to win.
The deciding match on Court 1 stayed on serve until Tristan Bradley and Peter Makk broke Hoogmartens and van Loben Sels to go up 6-5. An ensuing hold gave USC the day's initial point.
Each side secured three singles first sets. Four matches were ultimately decided in straight sets, starting when UCLA tied the score on No. 78 van Loben Sels' 6-2, 6-1 victory against Weightman on Court 3. The Bruin redshirt sophomore has now won three of his past four decisions, with each win coming in straight sets.
The nationally-ranked matchup of No. 82 Trouve and No. 118 Bigun on Court 2 went to the Trojan by a score of 7-5, 6-2. Soon after, though, the score was tied again by Hoogmartens on Court 4. The senior won for the fifth time in six contests, beating Iakubenko 6-3, 6-2.
A showdown between top-50 standouts on the Court 1 went the way of No. 49 Quan in decisive fashion. The freshman downed senior Makk, ranked 34th, 6-2, 6-3. The remaining two matches, on Courts 5 and 6, were soon both in third sets.
Morazzi outlasted No. 99 Tripathi 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to even the score once more. Then, with all eyes on Court 6, Lee closed out his 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 win by taking the final three games versus Gianluca Ballotta.
The Bruins will take part in the 136th Annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championship event, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 2 in La Jolla, Calif. Big Ten Conference play begins Friday, March 7 at LATC, where UCLA meets Indiana for a 2 p.m. PT start.
