No. 10 Men's Golf to Compete at Amer Ari Intercollegiate

February 04, 2025 | Men's Golf

WAIMEA, Hawaii – The No. 10-ranked UCLA men's golf team will compete this week at the 34th Amer Ari Intercollegiate, which will run from Thursday, Feb. 6, through Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Mauna Lani Resort Golf Club on the island of Hawai'i.

The University of Hawai'i and Hawai'i-Hilo are serving as co-hosts for this year's event, which is traditionally considered one of the top collegiate tournaments in the nation.

UCLA is among 20 teams that will participate in this year's tournament. The field of teams includes nine programs currently ranked among the top 25 in the nation, including No. 2 Arizona State, No. 3 Auburn, No. 5 Texas, No. 6 North Carolina, No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 10 UCLA, No. 13 Georgia Tech, No. 19 Pepperdine and No. 21 Texas Tech.

The collegiate teams comprising the rest of this year's field include Hawai'i, Hawai'i-Hilo, Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, San Jose State, Stanford, Washington and UC Davis and a pair of teams from Japan in Osaka Gakuin and Waseda.

This marks the second straight season in which the Amer Ari Intercollegiate will take place at Mauna Lani Resort. The teams are scheduled to play the 6,913-yard, par-72 North Course over 54 holes and three days. There will be a shotgun start each day at 7:30 a.m. HT (9:30 a.m. PT).

This Thursday's start comes nearly one week after the Bruins finished in 12th place out of 14 teams at the Southwestern Invitational, hosted in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Bruins' senior Pablo Ereño finished in a tie for fifth place at the three-day event at Sherwood Country Club. He finished the tournament at 3-under 210 with scores of 71-73-66 over three days. Ereño finished atop the leaderboard in round three on Wednesday (the final day of competition), having shot 5-under 66.

"We are really looking forward to get back into competition after a tough outing at the Southwestern Invitational at Sherwood," UCLA head coach Armen Kirakossian said. "Everyone is looking to get back to competition, to get things back on track again and playing well. Competition golf is tough. We felt that last week, but I think our guys are hungrier than ever to get back. This is a special tournament since it's in Hawai'i, and it should be a good bonding trip for our guys. We want to play loose and free on the golf course, so hopefully that can translate into results on the course. We're excited to be competing again. Last year, we did well in this event. We set some school scoring records in this tournament and unfortunately, a lot of other teams did as well, so our team's finish was OK. But I think that we'll have some confidence this week."

UCLA's lineup on Thursday will include two seniors (Pablo Ereño, Omar Morales), one junior (Kyle An) and two freshmen (Trevor Garus, Baylor Larrabee). Redshirt senior Andy Yoon will be competing as an individual.

This marks the Bruins' second competition in the 2025 calendar year after UCLA had a strong fall season with four competitions in September and October of 2024.

Last season, UCLA's team finished tied for eighth at 45-under 819 at the Amer Air Intercollegiate. The Bruins set the program record for 54-hole score in relation to par (-45), 18-hole score (268 in the third round) and 18-hole score in relation to par (-21). UCLA finished 17 strokes behind tournament champion North Carolina, who shot 68-under 796. Arizona State's Wenyi Ding was the tournament medalist, winning by nine strokes at 27-under (63-64-62). There were 20 teams and 124 total golfers in the field.
