UCLA Win Streak Halted at Nine After Loss at Utah

March 15, 2025 | Gymnastics

Salt Lake City, Utah - UCLA's nine-meet winning streak came to an end on Saturday night as the No. 4 Bruins fell to No. 5 Utah, 198.100-197.425 in front of a sold-out crowd of 15,558 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. UCLA did, however, extend its streak of 197+ team scores to 10 consecutive meets, thanks in part to 9.950s from Frida Esparza on bars, Brooklyn Moors on floor and Chae Campbell on beam.

The Bruins started out with a strong 49.425 on uneven bars in the first rotation, matching the Utes' 49.425 on vault. UCLA's final three competitors each scored 9.900 or higher, with Esparza leading the Bruins with a 9.950, Jordan Chiles contributing a 9.925, and Macy McGowan scoring 9.900.

In rotation two, however, Utah began to separate itself, scoring 49.525 on uneven bars while the Bruins scored 49.175 on vault. Campbell was the Bruins' top scorer on vault with a 9.900 and received a perfect mark of 9.95 from one of the two judges. Moors stuck her vault and received a 9.875. Macy McGowan also scored 9.875.

UCLA moved to floor exercise in the third rotation and started out strong with  9.850s from Mika Webster-Longin and Emma Malabuyo. Campbell hit a big routine, resurrecting her 2024 Black Panther routine, and scored 9.900. Moors received a 10 from one of the judges and a final score of 9.950. The Bruins' floor score of 49.375, however, was below their average of 49.520. Utah, meanwhile, scored 49.600 on beam, on the strength of a perfect 10 from senior Grace McCallum.

The Bruins finished strong on balance beam in the final rotation, scoring 49.450. Emily Lee led off with a 9.900, Webster-Longin made her competitive debut on the event, scoring 9.800. Campbell hit a career-high 9.950, and Ciena Alipio and Malabuyo each scored 9.900 to close the set.

Other highlights from the Bruins came in the form of their exhibition performers. Katelyn Rosen hit 9.800 or higher on all three events, scoring 9.875 on beam, 9.850 on bars and 9.800 on floor, and Paige Anastasi hit her Yurchenko 1.5 for a 9.825.

UCLA will next compete at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday, May 22 at 5pm ET/2pm PT. The Bruins are the No. 1 seed at the Championships and will compete in Olympic order.
