Men's Tennis Blanks Indiana in Big Ten Debut
March 07, 2025 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA men's tennis celebrated its first-ever Big Ten Conference match with an emphatic win Friday afternoon, beating Indiana 7-0 at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Bruins (3-6, 1-0 Big Ten) dropped just one set on the day. Emon van Loben Sels clinched the victory, providing one of five straight-set wins. He joined Kaylan Bigun, Rudy Quan and Aadarsh Tripathi in winning twice. The Hoosiers fell to 9-3 on the season with their conference-opening loss.
The doubles combination of Bigun and Quan picked up a break of serve against Braedon Gelletich and Karan Raghavendra to lead 4-3 on Court 3. The all-freshman UCLA combination would also prevail in the subsequent two games to put its team in the driver's seat. On Court 2, Tripathi and van Loben Sels seized the first four games and never looked back en route to a 6-3 clinching result opposite Matteo Antonescu and Sam Scherer. Tripathi and van Loben Sels had never played together in a match prior to Friday.
All six singles first sets were won by Bruins. Quickly, the front courts would finish. First, Bigun raced past Jip van Assendelft to a 6-3, 6-3 victory on Court 2. No. 37 Quan then handed Deacon Thomas a 6-2, 6-4 defeat on the top court, putting UCLA a point shy of the decider.
With the other two stadium courts cleared, No. 77 van Loben Sels provided the clinching point. The 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Ben Pomeranets on Court 4 represented van Loben Sels' first deciding win of 2025 and third of the redshirt sophomore's career.
Ballotta soon after notched his first dual-match singles win of the season, beating Raghavendra 6-2, 6-2 on Court 6. No. 122 Tripathi then knocked off Gelletich by a 6-3, 6-4 margin on Court 5. Finally, in the only three-set contest, Alexander Hoogmartens held off Scherer for a 7-6(3), 3-6, 1-0(7) result on Court 4. Hoogmartens has now won six of his past seven singles matches and is 7-2 in dual-match play to lead the team.
