March 07, 2025 | Men's Volleyball

LOS ANGELES – The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team took down No. 10 Stanford 3-0 inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Friday evening in an MPSF conference match. Set scores were 25-22, 25-22, and 25-22.

Cooper Robinson led the way with 15 kills on 25 attack attempts to hit .520 for the match, and also added seven blocks. Zach Rama tallied seven kills and three service aces, while Thorne added five kills and a season-high seven blocks.

Trent Taliaferro and Andrew Rowan both had 14 assists on the night while Rama added a team-high six digs. As a team, the Bruins' defense was a handful on Friday and totaled 12 total blocks, and limited Stanford to a .076 hitting percentage, the lowest a team has hit against UCLA this season.

The Bruins (12-3, 2-0 MPSF) and Cardinal (7-8, 0-2 MPSF) traded points to begin the first set, with neither team gaining more than a two-point advantage as Stanford took a 10-8 lead before the Bruins rattled off three straight points.  Robinson slammed home his third kill of the set to make it a 10-9 Stanford lead. A point later Thorne and Robinson combined for the block to tie the set at 10-10, before Taliaferro dished out another kill for Robinson and the Bruins led 11-10.

The two sides continued to trade points, before UCLA took a 22-20 lead courtesy of a triple block by David, Rama and Taliaferro. UCLA then took the set 25-22 courtesy of a David kill and took a 1-0 lead into the second set.

As for the second set the Cardinal jumped out to a 13-8 lead, before the Bruins started chipping away at the deficit.

David Decker came in and the Bruins sandwiched a Robinson kill around three blocks to make it a 14-14 game. Decker got the last one, a solo block, which made it 14-14 in the set.

The Cardinal responded and went on a 3-0 run to take a 19-16 lead and forced a Bruin timeout. Andrew Rowan then came in at setter and UCLA closed the set on a 7-1 run. Zach Rama single-handedly brought the Bruins in front with three service aces in a row and put UCLA up 23-22 in the set.

Rowan, Robinson and Thorne then combined for the block to take the second set, 25-23, and UCLA held a 2-0 advantage heading into the third set.

As for the third set, the Bruins continued to serve strongly, as a Rowan ace put the Bruins up 10-7 early on. With Christopher Hersh serving, Thorne slammed home a kill to put the Bruins up 14-10, before he hammered home another two points later off a dish from Rowan, and UCLA lead 16-11.

Stanford clawed their way back into the set and made it a 19-17 UCLA advantage before Rama earned another kill and put the Bruins up three, 20-17. Thorne then added two kills to finish off the match as the Bruins took the third set 25-22, and the match 3-0 overall.
