UCLA Beats Stanford on Senior Day, 197.675-197.100

March 09, 2025 | Gymnastics

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 3-ranked UCLA Gymnastics team (13-2) won their Senior Day meet with a score of 197.675-197.100 against No. 12-ranked Stanford. The Bruins used strong performances on balance beam and floor exercise in the final two rotations to take the over half-point victory in front of a UCLA Gymnastics record-setting crowd of 12,918 fans at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.

UCLA has won nine straight meets, scoring 197 or higher in all nine.

Each graduating senior had their shining moments during the meet. Emma Malabuyo scored 9.925 on beam, 9.900 on floor and 9.875 on bars. Brooklyn Moors contributed a 9.925 on floor and 9.900 on beam. Chae Campbell added a pair of 9.900s on vault and beam. Emily Lee hit a 9.925 leadoff beam routine. Frida Esparza scored 9.775 on bars. Performing exhibition routines, Mia Erdoes hit a 9.850 on bars and 9.825 on beam, Carissa Clay scored 9.750 on floor and 9.675 on beam, and Clara Wren exhibitioned on vault for the first time in over two years.

Junior Jordan Chiles stole the show, though, with a massive 39.750 all-around score, a new season high for any gymnast in the Big Ten Conference. Chiles scored 9.950 on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise to win those three events and added a season-high-tying 9.900 on balance beam.

"Today was a really special day," said The R.C. Rothman UCLA Head Gymnastics Coach Janelle McDonald. "I can't say enough about our senior class. They've been through so much in their journey as Bruins, had a lot of change throughout the course of their career. Going into this year, they decided they wanted to leave a better legacy than they walked into, and they have literally every single day shown up to be amazing leaders for our team, to lay a foundation that we're going to be able to continue to build on because they showed the people on our team how you lead, how you show up for one another, how you support each other through the good and the bad days. Today was just a celebration of all of that, and I couldn't be more proud of this team and our seniors in particular."

The Bruins began the meet with a 49.225 on vault, a score that was solidified thanks to strong marks by the final two competitors Campbell, who scored 9.900, and Chiles, who tied her season-best with a 9.950. Stanford (10-3) took the early lead after totaling 49.350 on uneven bars, led by 9.925s from leadoff performer Anapaula Gutierrez and Anna Roberts.

UCLA regained the lead after rotation two, matching Stanford's bars score with a 49.350 of its own, while the Cardinal scored 49.125 on vault. Chiles again led the Bruins with another 9.950. Freshman Mika Webster-Longin recorded a new career-high on the event, scoring 9.925. Malabuyo hit for a 9.875, and freshman Macy McGowan added a 9.825.
Up by just one-tenth going into the third rotation, the Bruins pulled away with a dominant performance on balance beam. All six Bruins scored 9.900 or higher for a total team score of 49.575. Lee led off with a 9.925, and Chiles, Campbell and Moors followed with 9.900s. Ciena Alipio and Malabuyo closed it out with a pair of 9.925s, giving UCLA a 148.150-147.600 lead over Stanford, who scored 49.125 on floor exercise.
UCLA finished the meet with another strong rotation on floor, scoring 49.525 on the event. Four Bruins scored 9.900 or higher - Chiles with a 9.950, Moors and McGowan with 9.925s, and Malabuyo with a 9.900. Stanford also had a strong final rotation, scoring 49.500 on beam, led by Brenna Neault's meet-winning 9.950.

The Bruins will travel to Salt Lake City to face off against No. 5-ranked Utah on Saturday, Mar. 15. The meet will begin at 6:00 p.m. PST and will be broadcast on FOX.
