No. 7 Softball Edges Michigan in Extras, 4-3
April 27, 2025 | Softball
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Freshman pitcher Addisen Fisher spotted the No. 7-ranked UCLA softball team 4.0 scoreless innings of relief to help the Bruins defeat Michigan, 4-3, in extra innings at Carol Hutchins Stadium Sunday evening.
After being shutout for five straight innings by Michigan starter Erin Hoehn, the Bruins (44-7, 15-3 Big Ten) loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the eighth to set up a prime scoring opportunity. Redshirt sophomore designated player Alexis Ramirez, still working her way back from an injury sustained in week one of last season, delivered the go-ahead RBI with an infield single deep in the 5-6 hole, notching her fifth straight game with a base hit.
Ramirez' heroics gave Fisher a 4-3 buffer to close out the bottom half. Fisher, who recorded her first career save in game one on Saturday, picked up two quick outs on a groundout to second base and lineout to left field to inch closer to another win. The Wolverines (32-17, 9-9 Big Ten) worked two free passes on a hit-by-pitch and four-pitch walk to Ellie Sieler, putting the game-winning run on first to keep their hopes alive. Fisher extinguished those hopes quickly, striking out her fifth batter of the ballgame on an 0-2 count for the final out.
UCLA is now 1-1 in extra-inning games this season. With her scoreless outing, Fisher improved her record to a flawless 15-0 and dropped her ERA to a team-leading 2.26.
Left-handed pitcher Kaitlyn Terry started the game for UCLA and surrendered three earned runs off three hits, four walks and one hit-by-pitch before exiting after the third inning. Terry walked the first batter of the game, Indiana Langford, on five pitches and surrendered a two-run homer to Ella Stephenson that bounced off the left field foul pole to give Michigan its first lead of the series at 2-0 after the first inning.
UCLA answered in the top half of the second by loading the bases with no outs. Freshman Kaniya Bragg reached first on a comebacker that ricocheted off the pitcher into right field. A walk to Rylee Slimp and hit-by-pitch to Alexis Ramirez filled the pillows for the next batter, Sofia Mujica, who put the Bruins on the board with a deep sacrifice fly to center field. The pitcher Terry helped herself next with a two-RBI slap single up the middle to push two across and give UCLA a 3-2 lead.
Looking for a shutdown frame, Terry issued three straight free passes to Michigan's No. 8, 9 and 1 hitters with two outs on a hit-by-pitch and walk to bring up the heart of the order in the bottom of the second. Conway rocketed a ground ball to first base that deflected off Grant and allowed a run to score. On that same play, Pola fielded the carom and started what was an inning-ending 4-6-5-2 putout at home plate.
Hoehn, who was dealt her fourth loss of the season in a complete-game effort, retired six straight Bruin batters across the third and fourth innings.
UCLA's next best chance to score came in the top of the fifth when Terry and Pola beat out two infield singles to bring up the Bruins' slugging duo of Woolery and Grant with only one away. Woolery hit a deep fly ball to center field that allowed Terry to move up third base. After Michigan's cutoff woman went to second base in an attempt to throw out Pola on the play, Terry darted home but was gunned down in her head-first dive.
