No. 24 Women's Tennis Hands Minnesota 4-0 Defeat
April 06, 2025 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The 24th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team surrendered just five total games in its completed singles matches en route to a 4-0 win against Minnesota in Big Ten Conference play at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Kate Fakih turned in her second clinching victory in as many days. Also prevailing in singles play for the Bruins (10-7, 5-3 in Big Ten play) were Bianca Fernandez and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer. The Golden Gophers fell to 9-13 (1-8) in dual matches.
Lutkemeyer and Ahmani Guichard seized the final three games – including two breaks of serve – versus Aiva Schmitz/Arina Valitova to close out a 6-3 win on Court 3. Guichard/Lutkemeyer is 24-7 on the season (12-3 in dual-match play). The third-ranked pair of Fakih and Olivia Center broke the serve of Jeselle Ante/Sofia Pinto out of the gate and rode that all the way to a 6-4 win on Court 2 to clinch the initial point. Center/Fakih (25-6, 11-3) has clinched a team-high seven doubles points on the campaign.
UCLA won all six singles first sets by scores of 6-0 or 6-1. No. 22 Lutkemeyer and Fernandez moved quickly to add to their team's total, starting up top. Lutkemeyer downed Schmitz 6-0, 6-1, picking up her seventh positive result in eight decisions.
Playing for the first time since March 14, Fernandez did not miss a beat. The sophomore duplicated Lutkemeyer's performance, taking down Deniz Turan by a 6-0, 6-1 margin on Court 6. The win was Fernandez's first this season in dual-match play.
One day after logging the final point of a 4-3 victory against No. 19 Wisconsin, No. 44 Fakih was against responsible for point No. 4. Sunday's 6-0, 6-3 decision over Pinto was Fakih's fourth clincher overall this year.
Next up for the Bruins is a trip to the Midwest. They face Iowa Friday, April 11 at Hawkeyee Tennis and Recreation Complex, with first serve scheduled for 3 p.m. PT. A visit to Nebraska's Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center follows Sunday, April 13 at 10 a.m. PT.
