UCLA Falls to Michigan, 2-0, in Big Ten Tournament Championship

May 10, 2025 | Softball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. โ€“ The No. 2 seed UCLA fell to No. 8 seed Michigan, 2-0, in the Big Ten Tournament Championship in the Bruins' inaugural season in the conference at Bittinger Stadium Saturday afternoon.
ย
The Bruins (49-10), who were making their third straight conference tournament title game appearance, recorded just three hits off Wolverines' (38-19) starting pitcher Lauren Derkowski.
ย
UCLA freshman right-hander Addisen Fisher provided a quality start with just two runs off four hits in 5.2 innings. Fisher and Derkowski took a scoreless pitcher's duel into the sixth inning before Michigan manufactured its two runs in the ballgame.
ย
Wolverines' second baseman Indiana Langford singled to left field and advanced to second on a ball booted by freshman Rylee Slimp to spark the sixth-inning rally, marking Michigan's first runner in scoring position off Fisher. One pitch later, No. 2 hitter Jenissa Conway doubled over a leaping Jessica Clements off the center field wall to score the go-ahead and game-winning run. Conway advanced to third base on a comebacker fielded by Fisher and came around to score the second run of the inning on an infield single stopped by a diving Kaniya Bragg at shortstop.
ย
Junior Jordan Woolery led off the next half inning with a walk, forcing Michigan to go to the bullpen and bring in reliever Erin Hoehn. Megan Grant rolled over a pitch to first base for an unassisted out while moving Rylee Pinedo, Woolery's pinch runner, up 60 feet to second base. The next batter Alexis Ramirez smoked a grounder to third base that was picked by a diving Maddie Erickson for a second out. Rylee Slimp hit a pop out to left to end the inning.
ย
The Bruins' 7-8-9 hitters went down quietly in order in the bottom of the seventh.
ย
UCLA's best chance to score came in the bottom of the fifth with runners on second and third. Bragg opened the frame with a single to right center. Terry laid down a bunt single and a fielding error by Michigan's first baseman allowed the two Bruins to both move into scoring position on the play with one out and the top of the lineup due up. Clements and Pola both skied two routine fly balls within a three-pitch span to extinguish the scoring opportunity.
ย
Fisher (16-2) finished her outing with five strikeouts and drew just her second loss of the year.
