Women's Tennis Drops 4-2 Decision to Defending Champs
May 09, 2025 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The UCLA women's tennis team had its NCAA Championship journey and season ended by second-seeded Texas A&M Friday in a 4-2 result at Mitchell Tennis Center. The Bruins finished with an 18-9 record.
The defending NCAA champion Aggies (28-3) were pushed to the limit by UCLA, which got singles wins from Bianca Fernandez and Kimmi Hance. Texas A&M, which took the doubles point, later added singles victories from its ranked trio of Mary Stoiana, Mia Kupres and clincher Lucciana Perez.
Perez and Nicole Khirin teamed to beat Ahmani Guichard/Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer by a 6-3 margin on Court 3, giving the Aggies an advantage in doubles play. The Bruins answered on Court 2, with No. 11 Olivia Center/Kate Fakih breaking the serve of Lexington Reed/Daria Smetannikov for 5-4 before closing out their team-high 31st doubles win. The initial point was ultimately decided up top, though, as Kupres/Stoiana outlasted No. 14 Hance/Elise Wagle 6-3.
UCLA did not go quietly in singles play, claiming three first sets. In the first of four ranked decisions, No. 1 Stoiana defeated No. 31 Lutkemeyer 6-0, 6-2 on Court 1 to make Texas A&M's lead 2-0.
Fernandez cut the Bruin deficit in half with her 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Reed on Court 6. Fernandez finished her sophomore campaign by winning three of her last four singles matches.
No. 67 Kupres snapped No. 62 Wagle's personal six-match winning streak with a 6-1, 6-4 decision on Court 3. Wagle's classmate Hance, ranked No. 93 nationally, turned in a season-best win on Court 2. Hance knocked off No. 13 Nicole Khirin 6-2, 7-5 on Court 2, equaling the highest-ranked victory of her career. Hance previously beat No. 13 Connie Ma of Stanford on March 31, 2024.
The teams alternated wins again, this time sealing UCLA's fate. No. 51 Perez delivered the deciding victory by a 7-6(3), 6-1 score versus No. 39 Fakih on Court 4.
