UCLA Softball Season Ends After Extra Innings Loss to Tennessee

Oklahoma City - Down to their last out and facing elimination on day three of the Women's College World ย Series, No. 9 seed UCLA forced extra innings but ultimately fell to No. 7 seed Tennessee, 5-4 in nine innings.ย
With a runner on and two outs in the top of the seventh, UCLA's Megan Grant hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 4-4, but Tennessee walked it off in the bottom of the ninth with a bases-loaded RBI single by Laura Mealer.
"First and foremost, I want to congratulate Tennessee," said The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez. "Just a great battle to the end, wish them the best of luck moving forward. For us though, I could not be more proud, period. The ability for us to be able to fight, the ability for us to come back, just down to the last pitch. There's something about what UCLA softball can do with your backs against the wall, and just rising to the occasion to create some amazing memories. The experience game for my younger Bruins, for the Bruins who have been here before and who just showed who they are on the biggest stage, is something that I'm proud of, and I'm really excited for the future."ย ย
Mealer had given Tennessee the early lead in the bottom of the first with a bases loaded two-run single, but UCLA answered right back in the top of the second with a pair of solo home runs by Alexis Ramirez and Sofia Mujica.ย
The Bruins (55-13) had a chance to break the 2-2 tie in the top of the fifth. A single by Jessica Clements, double by Jordan Woolery and intentional walk to Grant loaded the bases with two out, but pitcher Karlyn Pickens struck out Ramirez to leave them loaded and the game tied. It would not be tied for long, however, as Taylor Pannell hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead before Grant's seventh-inning heroics.ย
The Vols (47-16) led off the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff walk and bunted the runner over to second. After intentionally walking Sophia Nugent with first base open, Bruin relief pitcher Taylor Tinsley got McKenna Gibson to line into a double play, with Woolery making the grab and doubling up the runner at second. The Bruins got out of a jam in the eighth inning as well, with Tinsley stranding runners on the corners. Ramirez had a second bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the ninth but grounded out to end the inning.
Tennessee came within inches of a Pannell walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth, but her long drive to left field hit the top of the left field wall for a double. After two intentional walks to load the bases with one out, Mealer ended the game with a single to left field.
Pickens picked up the win for Tennessee, her 25th of the season. She totaled 148 pitches over nine innings and struck out seven. Tinsley got the loss, giving up just one run in 3.1 innings. Starter Kaitlyn Terry allowed four runs and struck out seven.ย
