Winn Gives UCLA 1-0 Win over Maryland

LOS ANGELES - No. 4 UCLA extended its unbeaten streak to eight games after a 1-0 victory over Maryland on Sunday afternoon.
On her 20th birthday, sophomore forward Bella Winn scored the game's only goal, taking a Val Vargas throw-in and firing a shot from the top of the box to the far corner for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Winn also leads the team in game-winning goals with three.
Winn's goal was all UCLA needed, as the Bruin defense clamped down on Maryland, allowing just two shots in the game, one in each half. The Terrapins' only shot on goal came in the 81st minute when UCLA goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor saved a header by Alyssa Abramson off a corner kick.
Nakfoor earned her fifth solo shutout of the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.32. As a team, the Bruins have totaled eight shutouts on the year and hold a 0.27 team goals against average.
UCLA recorded 13 shots on the afternoon, six of which were on goal. Maryland goalkeeper Faith Luckey made four saves, and the Terrapin defense had a team save.
The Bruins improve to 8-2-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Big Ten, while Maryland drops to 6-6-0, 2-3-0 in the Big Ten. UCLA continues to lead the conference in points with 13. In second place with 11 points are Michigan State and Washington. UCLA and Washington will meet in Seattle next on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7pm PT.
