Bruins Split on Opening Day at Hawai'i

The Bruins began the day with a sweep over the Longhorns. All-Americans and 2025 MPSF Pair of the Year Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd took the first point of the season with a 21-19, 21-18 victory on court 1 over Brecht Piersma/Katie Hashman. On court 3, Kaley Mathews and Ensley Alden earned a straight-sets victory over Emma Grace Robertson/Savannah Thomas, 21-18, 21-15, followed quickly by a court 4 win by Ava Williamson and Harper Cooper, who defeated Ella Keeven/Lily Davis, 22-20, 21-13. With the win secured, the final two matches went to three sets. Mallory LaBreche and Adelina Okazaki came back from a first-set loss to beat Macey Butler/Noa Sonnevile, 16-21, 21-15, 15-9, on court 5, and Alexa Fernandez and Cassie Dodd closed with a 23-21, 19-21, 15-9 win over Anna and Kacka Pavelkova on court 2.
Nearly seven hours later, the Bruins returned to take on the Rainbow Wahine and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a quick 21-14, 21-8 win by Perez/Boyd on court 1 over Sarah Burton/Caprice Lorenzo and a 21-16, 21-14 win by Williamson/Cooper on court 4 over Emily Heintzelman/Sydney Miller. The Bruins could not sustain the lead, however, losing the next three matches. Hawai'i's Julia Lawrenz/Izadora Stedile ousted Fernandez/Dodd on court 2 in straight sets, 21-10, 21-19, to trim UCLA's lead to 2-1, shifting all attention to courts 3 and 5, which each went to a third set. The Rainbow Wahine tied the match at 2-2 on court 3 after a 18-21, 21-17, 15-10 win by Julia Thelle/Sophie Buschmann over Mathews/Alden and then claimed victory on court 5 with a 21-16, 15-21, 15-13 win by Kristen Serrano/Kiera Cornman over Hannah Fleming and LaBreche.
The Bruins return to Queen's Beach on Friday to take on LMU at 1pm PT/11am HT and Stanford at 4:45pm PT/2:45pm HT.
