Bruins Beat USC, 3-1, to Wrap up Tournament in Hawai’i

HONOLULU – After a lengthy delay due to inclement weather conditions, the top-ranked UCLA beach volleyball team handed No. 4 USC its first loss of the season, 3-1, on Day Three of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic on Queen's Beach. The Bruins' scheduled match with California was canceled.
UCLA won the first set on three courts and won those matches in straight sets to claim the victory over the Trojans. Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd took the first point on court 1, beating Ashley Pater/Kennedy Coakley, 21-11, 21-18. Kaley Matthews and Ensley Alden followed with a 21-13, 21-14 win over Alana Embry/Madison Goellner on court 3. USC took the next point on court 2, as Zoey Henson/Sarah Wood upended Alexa Fernandez and Cassie Dodd in a close match, 22-20, 21-18. But Ava Williamson and Harper Cooper clinched the win on court 4 with a 21-15, 21-14 victory over Quincy Stephens/Kaileigh Truslow, their fifth win of the weekend. Jesse Dueck and Mallory LaBreche were winning in the third set on court 5 when the Bruins won the match.
The Bruins will host the Battle for LA on Feb. 27 and 28 at Mapes Beach. The tournament opens on Friday, Feb. 27 with UCLA facing Boise State at 10am.
