Bruins Sweep on Day Two of Battle for LA

LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 UCLA beach volleyball team went undefeated on Day Two of the Battle for LA at Mapes Beach and finished 4-0 on the weekend. UCLA beat No. 11 Long Beach State, 5-0, in the day's first match and downed Pepperdine, 5-0, in the final match. UCLA senior Maggie Boyd became the 11th Bruin to reach 100 career wins with her straight-set victory against Pepperdine.

The Bruins (7-2) started their day with an efficient 5-0 win over Long Beach State. Cassie Dodd and Alexa Fernandez won in straight sets on court 2, defeating Tineke Hinton and Demi Wagdy, 26-24, 24-22. Ava Williamson and Jesse Dueck found themselves victorious seconds after that, winning their three-set match 21-13, 19-21, 15-13 on court 4 over Kiara Edwards and Savannah Standage to give UCLA the quick 2-0 lead. The Bruins earned sweeps on all courts after, with Adelina Okazaki and Mallory LaBreche clinching the game for the Bruins in their 21-18, 21-11 win on court 5 over Victoria Henkel and Mahala Esser. Sally Perez and Boyd followed their lead with a 21-14, 21-16 win over Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah on court 1. Harper Cooper and Ensley Alden finished the sweep with a 21-15, 21-19 victory on court 3.

After falling to Long Beach State, 4-1, in its first match, Pepperdine faced another tough opponent in the Bruins in the final contest of the day. New pair Cooper and Dueck won their first match in record time, defeating Ginerva Merlini and Emi Erickson, 21-14, 21-5, on court 4 in only 29 minutes. Dodd and Fernandez won their three-set thriller shortly after on court 2, beating Maddy Snow and Gabriella Perez, 21-15, 18-21, 15-11. All other Bruins finished their matches in straight sets, starting with Williamson and Alden beating Alice Jagielska and Sonia Mancuso, 21-17, 21-13, on court 4. LaBreche and Ford won seconds later, beating Emma Bubelis and Deanie Woodruff, 21-11, 21-14, on court 5. Perez and Boyd closed the match for the Bruins with their 21-17, 22-20 win, making Boyd the 11th Bruin to reach the century mark.
