No. 10 UCLA Hits Four Homers, Tops Illinois 10-1 to Clinch Series
April 11, 2026 | Softball
URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 10 UCLA softball team blasted four home runs in a 10-1 run-rule victory to secure a Big Ten series win over Illinois at Eichelberger Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Bruins (36-5, 15-2 Big Ten) broke the game open in the top of the third with a pair of three-run homers from Jordan Woolery and Bri Alejandre. Redshirt freshman Aleena Garcia and freshman Jolyna Lamar also went deep, hitting home runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
UCLA has hit 12 home runs through two games in its series against the Fighting Illini (11-30, 2-11 Big Ten).
Redshirt junior Sydney Somerndike starred in the circle for the Bruins, pitching her second complete-game win of the season to improve to 6-0. She surrendered just one run on three hits and three walks while recording one strikeout. Her first complete-game victory came in February against Fresno State at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Trailing 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Illinois scratched across one run on an RBI double to center field by Adisyn Caryl to keep the game alive. Lamar, playing center field, started an 8-6-2 relay to nab the inning-ending out at home plate.
Woolery put the mercy rule back into effect in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to shallow right field, scoring Rylee Slimp from third base. Woolery, who homered for a second straight game, extended her NCAA-leading RBI total to 84 with four more on Saturday. She is two RBIs shy of her season high of 86, set as a junior last season, and seven RBIs away from tying the program record of 91 set by Stacey Nuveman in 1999.
Mia Phillips plated the Bruins' final run later in the sixth on an RBI infield single into the 5-6 hole.
