No. 10 UCLA Secures 9-5 Win Over Hawai’i

LOS ANGELES – The No. 10 UCLA softball team defeated Hawai'i 9-5 in a nonconference game at Easton Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The Bruins (30-5) totaled six hits and seven walks, led by senior Jordan Woolery's 3-for-4 performance with five RBIs. Woolery hit her 21st home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning.

Woolery increased her NCAA-leading RBI total to 76 through 35 games, which ranks fourth in UCLA single-season history. She is 11 RBIs shy of her career-best 86 set last season, the second-highest total in program history.

Right-hander Sydney Somerndike logged 4.1 innings of relief in her 10th appearance of the season. Somerndike (5-0) earned the win, allowing two runs on one hit with four walks.

UCLA manufactured its first run without recording a hit in the first inning to tie the game at 1-1. Leadoff hitter Rylee Slimp reached on a hit-by-pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Smartly, Slimp read a routine flyout by Megan Grant to left field and was able to tag up and move to third. That heads-up baserunning proved valuable as Slimp was able to score on groundout by Woolery to shortstop.

Grant went 0 for 2 with two runs scored and two walks, snapping her 19-game hitting streak.

Hawai'i (16-15) regained the lead with two runs in the second on an RBI groundout and an RBI single to shallow center.

UCLA collected its first hits in the third inning. Woolery delivered an RBI single through the left side before Kaniya Bragg followed with a two-run double to left-center, giving the Bruins a 4-3 lead they did not relinquish.

Leyva and Woolery combined to drive in four runs with their home runs in the fourth. Bri Alejandre added UCLA's final run on a Hawai'i fielding error.
