Bruins Split on Day One of Best in the West

The Bruins won a tight match against Cal Poly to start the tournament. Kenzie Brower and Taylor Ford took the first point with a 21-17, 21-19 win on court 5 over Bailey Showalter/Peyton Dueck. Kaley Mathews and Ensley Alden earned another point for UCLA on court 2, extending their winning streak to 14. The match came down to the 1s after Cal Poly earned wins on courts 3 and 4. Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd won the first set on court 1, 22-20, before Ella Connor/Erin Inskeep won set 2, 21-15. The tiebreaker was also a dogfight, but Perez/Boyd came through with a 16-14 win to secure the match for the Bruins.
UCLA wrapped up play for the day with a showdown against top-ranked Stanford. The Cardinal took the first two points on courts 2 and 5 before the Bruins evened it up with wins on court 3 by Cooper and Fernandez (12-21, 21-10, 15-3) and on court 1 by Perez and Boyd (21-14, 19-21, 17-15). The match came down to the fours, where Clara Stowell/Indigo Clarke prevailed over Williamson and Brower in a three-set 17-21, 21-18, 15-9 thriller.
The Bruins will face No. 4 USC and No. 10 Long Beach on Saturday to wrap up tournament play.
