Mike Burton
- Induction:
- 1984
Mike Burton, a five-time NCAA champion at UCLA from 1967-1970, was an Olympic champion during and after his college career. Burton began swimming as an adolescent after injuring his knee in a bicycle collision with a truck. Eventually, at the height of his training, he swam 4,000 meters a day to build his endurance. The rigorous conditioning paid off with back-to-back victories in the 1500-meter freestyle at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. He also won the 400-meter freestyle at the 1968 Games. Burton retired from active competition after the 1972 Games and entered coaching after that.
He was a charter member of the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.
