Women's Tennis Team Rebounds with 5-4 Win over Notre Dame

It took a major rally for No 8 ranked UCLA to pull out the 5-4 win over No. 16 ranked Notre Dame in consolation action at the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin today, but the Bruins pulled it off. The last time these two teams met UCLA prevented the Irish from advancing to the NCAA Team Championships they were hosting by posting a 5-1 win in last year's NCAA Midwest Region Championships.
UCLA rookie Petya Marinova had her back to the wall in singles and doubles play, and came away the hero. With UCLA trailing 4-2 following the completion of singles and No. 1 doubles play, Marinova saved three team match points in her No. 6 singles match against Lindsey Green before rallying to a 2-6, 7-6(6), 7- 6(6) win. Marinova then took the court with doubles partner Cristina Popescu, who also won her singles match 7-5, 6-1 over No. 10 ranked Michelle Dasso, to register the decisive win, 8-4 over Green and Scaringe, in the No.3 doubles match.
Also registering a singles win for the Bruins was junior Katia Roubanova, who defeated Kelly Zalinski 7-6(8), 6-4 in the No. 5 position. Roubanova also teamed with senior Brandi Freudenberg for a key win in the No. 2 doubles slot which tied the match at four all.
With the victory UCLA improves to 6-2 overall and advances to face host Wisconsin on Saturday at 9 a.m., while Notre Dame will play USC at the same time.
