Bruins Victorious in First Round

Women's Tennis Downs Ducks, 5-1

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's tennis team had leads in five of the six singles matches but could only hang on for one win, as the fourth-ranked UCLA Bruins held on for the 5-1 victory at the Willow Creek Tennis Courts. Doubles were not played since the match had been already been decided.

The Ducks only win came when senior captain Shanelle Kaneshiro fought back from losing the first game to record a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 position over UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt. Oregon had many opportunities in other matches, especially at No. 3, where Adeline Arnaud held a 4-0 advantage in the third set before losing to Brandi Freudenberg, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 1, 30th-ranked Annica Cooper of the Bruins racked up 10 straight points after falling behind 3-2 in the first set to dispose of the Ducks Alina Wygonowska, 6-3, 6-0.

The Ducks received another loss when it was learned that redshirt freshman Sarah Colistros knee injury will keep her sidelined for the rest of the season. Colistro, who redshirted last year because of a torn hamstring, has a degenerative cartilage problem in her right knee that will require surgery. Colistro played in the No. 3 position in singles and No. 2 in doubles and was 10-10 on the year.

We definitely played better today than we did yesterday, said Oregon Head Coach Jack Griffin. Everyone battled hard and stepped it up a little more. We will need that now that Sarah is out for the year. It was a great win for Shanelle to battle back like that. We also had a lot of chances that we just didnt capitalize on. No one likes to lose, but were trying to develop as a team and as a program, and if we continue to compete as hard as we did today against the fourth-ranked team in the nation, we are going to beat a lot of teams. This is the first season weve actually been in the matches with the UCLAs and the Washingtons, and as our freshmen mature, we will only get better. We will use this as a stepping stone to get to the level that they are at now, and hopefully in a few years we will be right there with them.
