LOS ANGELES - The No. 8 UCLA women's tennis team defeated No. 33 University of San Diego 8-1 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. The victory is the second of the young dual-match season for the Bruins who are now 2-0, while USD fell to 1-3.

Today's singles action was closer than the final score indicated as three matches went the distance with UCLA prevailing in two of those. Junior Amanda Basica put the Bruins ahead 4-1 as she posted a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win over freshman Katrina Valkyova on court No. 3. Clinching the team victory for UCLA today with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win on court No. 4 was senior Brandi Freudenberg, who defeated USD freshman Paola Arrangoiz.

The lone highlight for USD came on court No. 1 where junior Zuzana Lesenarova, currently the No. 1 ranked player in the nation, defeated UCLA sophomore Cristina Popescu, who is listed No. 11 in the national rankings. Lesenarova broke Popescu early in the first set and jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Popescu battled back to 4-5 before dropping the set 4-6. Despite being down a set, Popescu had the momentum and sailed through the second 6-1 and opened the final 2-0. However, Lesenarova regrouped to claim the final six games and the match.

The quickest match of the day took place on court No. 6 where UCLA freshman Petya Marinova blanked USD sophomore Staci Lee 6-0, 6-0. Next off was court No. 2 where UCLA junior Annica Copper, who did not play in the Bruins' dual-match opener last week, made easy work of sophomore Anja Tragardh winning 6-1, 6-1. Moments later UCLA junior Katia Roubanova finished a 6-2, 6-1 win over USD senior Millier Prior on court No. 5. UCLA junior Elizabeth Schmidt did not compete again today, due to an injury. In an exhibition singles matches between rookies, UCLA's Rochelle Raiss defeated USD's Heather Polumbus 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles action, UCLA claimed victory on all three courts. First to finish was court No. 3 where Marinova and Popescu teamed for an 8-3 win over Prior and Tragardh. On court No. 2, Freudenberg and Roubanova defeated the team of Arrangoiz and Lee 8-3. UCLA's No. 1 team of Basica and Cooper finished the day, posting an 8-4 win over Lesenarova and Valkyova.

Next up for the Bruins is the start of Pac-10 Conference action over the weekend. UCLA hosts Arizona on Friday Jan. 29 at 1:30 p.m. and ASU on Saturday, Jan. 30 at Noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus. Admission to all UCLA's home tennis matches is free.

There has been a change of location for next week's match scheduled to take place against local-rival Pepperdine on Tues., Feb. 2. That match will now be played at Pepperdine at 2:00 p.m. and the Mar. 19 match with the Waves will be played at UCLA at 1:30.
