Bruins Open Pac-10 Play With Win Over Arizona
June 21, 1999 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES - The No. 8 UCLA women's tennis team opened Pac-10 Conference action with a 7-2 win over No. 24 University of Arizona at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. The victory improves UCLA's overall record to 3-0, while Arizona fell to 2-2.
UCLA claimed five of the six singles matches to once again clinch the match before doubles action began. With the Bruins usual No. 1 player, Cristina Popescu, taking the day off in singles, last year's top-gun Annica Cooper stepped up to register an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Arizona senior Monique Allegre on court No. 1 to set the tone for the match. Next off the court with an identical score (6-2, 6-2) was the Bruins only senior Brandi Freudenberg who defeated Arizona sophomore Joanna Buczkowska on court No. 3. The Bruins got their third point from court No. 4 as junior Katia Roubanova defeated UA sophomore Michelle Gough 7-5, 6-2. In a non-counting exhibition match on court No. 7, Arizona's Leresa Marino defeated UCLA's Jennifer Donahue 6-2, 6-1. On court No. 2, UCLA junior Amanda Basica held off UA freshman Lindsay Blau 6-2, 7- 5 leaving the Bruins just one point from the team victory as the final two matches went into a third set.
Arizona prevailed in a battle of freshman on court No. 6 as Carly Stringer traded 6-3 sets with UCLA's Rochelle Raiss before Stringer powered to a 6-0 win in the third. UCLA clinched the team victory when rookie Petya Marinova battled back for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win on court No. 5 over UA junior Vanessa Abel. In doubles action, UCLA's No. 1 team of Basica and Cooper started doubles play by posting an 8-4 win over Allegre and Blau. Arizona reversed that score on court No. 3 where Marino and Stringer defeated Freudenberg and Raiss. The final match of the afternoon went the distance with UCLA prevailing. The Bruins' team of Marinova and Popescu held a slight advantage throughout the match and claimed the tiebreaker 7-4 for the 9-8 win over Abel and Gough.
Next up for the Bruins is more of Pac-10 Conference action as UCLA hosts No. 12 ASU on Saturday, Jan. 30 at Noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus. Admission to all UCLA's home tennis matches is free.
There has been a change of location for next week's match scheduled to take place against local-rival Pepperdine on Tues., Feb. 2. That match will now be played at Pepperdine at 2:00 p.m. and the Mar. 19 match with the Waves will be played at UCLA at 1:30 p.m.
