Women's Tennis Squad Falls to Georgia

In a rematch of the 1995 USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships (WNITC) final, Georgia again defeated UCLA, this time by a 6-2 margin. Today's loss marks the second straight year in which UCLA suffered a first round loss at the prestigious tournament host by the University of Wisconsin. No. 8 ranked UCLA will next face No. 16 Notre Dame in consolation action on Friday, while No. 3 ranked Georgia advances to meet the University of Mississippi, which is tied for No. 6 in the rankings.
Only two players were able to post victories in singles action for UCLA, both battling back from first set losses in the process. Senior Brandi Freudenberg upset No. 22 ranked Esther Knox 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 position and No. 13 ranked sophomore Cristina Popescu defeated 11th ranked Vanessa Castellano 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 slot.
