Top-Ranked UCLA Sweeps No. 13 ASU in Doubleheader

TEMPE, Ariz.-The 13th-ranked Arizona State softball team (37-22, 8-17 Pac-10) had a total of five hits as they fell to the top-ranked Bruins (53-5, 20-5 Pac-10) Saturday night at Sun Devil Club Stadium. The Devils lost the first game by a score of 7-1 and were shut out in the back end of the doubleheader 4-0.

UCLA broke the first game open in their half of the third when leftfielder Amanda Freed led off with a solo home run to centerfield to put the Bruins up 2-1. They scored five more runs that same inning on four hits and a Sun Devil error.

Arizona State scored their lone run of the game in the second on centerfielder Jen Langenhuizen's RBI double to deep center that scored Erin Wardein all the way from first.

Freshman Kirsten Voak picked up the loss for the Devils, falling to 20-12 on the season. Voak game up five runs (three earned) on seven hits, two strikeouts and three walks.

At the plate, Voak was 1-for-2 with an infield single. Missy Hixon, Nichole Thompson, and Langanhuizen each had one hit for the Devils.

For the Bruins offensively, Freed had a 3-for-4 outing with one RBI and a run scored while centerfielder Christie Ambrosi went 2-for-5 with two runs knocked in.

Starting pitcher Courtney Dale went the distance for UCLA and improve to 27-1 on the season. Dale scattered four hits and gave up one run, walked two, and struck out two batters.

Arizona State's only hit in the second game, a bunt single to the pitcher, came from shortstop Holly Smith.

Starter Erica Beach got the loss for the Devils and fell to 16-11. Over five innings, she gave up four hits, only two of them earned, on nine hits, two walks, and three strikeouts.

For UCLA, Freed and shortstop Crissy Buck both went 2-for-3, scoring a combined three runs. Freed was also the Bruins' winning pitcher, improving her record to 24-3. She struck out five and walked one in seven innings.
