LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of San Diego took an early seven-run lead after three innings and behind senior right-hander Kevin Gray's complete-game effort, rolled to a 10-1 victory over the UCLA baseball team Monday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins have now lost six of their last seven games, and fall to 25-19 overall, remaining 8-4 in the Pacific-10 Conference. USD improves to 27-22-1 with the win.
UCLA could only muster one run on eight hits off Gray through nine innings. Junior designated hitter Bill Scott and junior right fielder Matt Pearl were the only Bruins with more than one hit, both going 2-for-3. Junior catcher Ryan Hamill had the only extra base hit and RBI with a run-scoring double in the fourth inning. Junior second baseman Chase Utley had his 13-game hitting streak snapped, going 0-for-4.
Gray picked up the victory and improves to 3-2 this season, while UCLA starting right-hander Chad Cislak suffered the loss (0-5).
Cislak struggled early on and after a walk, a single and a hit batsman to load the bases in the top of the first, he walked Torero left fielder David Wright to force over the first run of the game. Catcher Alan Leuthard added another run grounding into a fielder's choice at second and was followed by a pop double in shallow right field by shortstop, driving in the third run of the inning. Leuthard also attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate by Utley to end the inning.
USD added to its lead in the second inning after Cislak hit two more batters and walked another to load the bases. After striking out first baseman Marty Hayes, right fielder Joe Lima singled in two more to give the Toreros a 5-0 lead.
San Diego chased Cislak with a two-run home run by designated hitter Zach Koucos in the top of the third. Freshman right-hander Kevin Jerkens came in to retire the next five straight batters he faced, and ended the night pitching 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
The Bruins pushed over their only run of the game in the fourth as Hamill doubled in Scott. UCLA didn't help its cause any, grounding into five double plays throughout the game.
USD added another run in the eighth on an RBI single by Hayes and two more in the ninth, both unearned, off UCLA freshman reliever Wade Clark.
Hayes led the Toreros with the bat, going 3-for-6 with one run and one RBI, while Koucos was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
Next up for UCLA, Cal State Fullerton comes to Jackie Robinson Stadium tomorrow for a 6 p.m. game in Westwood. Freshman lefty Mike Kunes will get the starting nod on the hill for UCLA, while junior right-hander Ronnie Corona will be on the mound for CSUF. The Bruins will then make their first ever trip to Pullman, Wash., as they face Washington State for a three-game weekend series Friday, April 28 through Sunday, April 30.
