May 29, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Top-seeded UCLA dropped a 3-2 decision to Saint Mary's Friday, the first day of D1 Baseball Championship Regional action at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Jacob Johnson delivered the difference-making home run in the ninth inning.
The back-and-forth contest saw the Bruins (51-7) lead 2-1 after the fifth inning. John Damozonio of the Gaels (35-25) threw seven innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking two. Jacob Johnson went 3 for 4 with a pair of solo home runs.
Roman Martin homered for UCLA. Roch Cholowsky put the Bruins in front momentarily with fifth-inning sacrifice fly. Starter Wylan Moss surrendered two earned runs on three hits, striking out four and walking one. Four relievers finished out the game, giving up one earned run on three hits.
With the loss, UCLA will face the winner of Friday's second game between Virginia Tech and Cal Poly. The Saturday elimination game will begin at 1 p.m. PT and television details have yet to be determined.
A scoreless first three innings saw just Jacob Johnson reach scoring position with a third-inning double. He was ultimately stranded, but took matters into his own hands with a fourth-inning, two-out solo homer off Moss for the day's first run.
The Bruins would answer in the bottom half of the inning, as Martin drove a one-out Damozonio offering over the wall in center field with no one aboard. Scoring continued for UCLA in the fifth, with Trey Gudoy's leadoff double the catalyst. Phoenix Call bunted him over to third base and, after a Dean West walk, Cholowsky's lineout to left brought the run home.
Saint Mary's tied the score once again in the fifth, cashing in a leadoff Tanner Griffith walk that drove Moss from the game. Makoa Sniffen hit a one-out, run-scoring double down the right-field line off Stump, who would ultimately strand the runner.
The score remained tied until Jacob Johnson stepped to the plate again with one out in the top of the ninth. He would lift a pitch from Easton Hawk to right field and just out of the reach of Jarrod Hocking for his second home run. Call reached with a one-out single in the bottom of the frame, but he was left on first.
