LOS ANGELES - Freshman shortstop Natasha Watley stole second base in the bottom of the first inning to tie the UCLA single-season record, and the Bruins went on to defeat Oregon State by a 6-1 margin. The victory means that the Bruins can finish no worse than third in the Pac-10. UCLA improves to 37-11-1 (12-7 Pac-10) while OSU falls to 36-17-1 (6-12 Pac-10).
The Beavers got their lone run in the top of the first inning, as leadoff hitter Shawna Feldt singled to right, and advanced to third on two groundouts. Pitcher Tarrah Beyster provided the RBI single to hit Feldt home, but was caught stealing at second base to end the inning.
UCLA batted around in the bottom half of the frame. Pitcher Amanda Freed led off with a triple off of the wall in right center field, which was followed by a single from Watley. Watley immediately stole second base, her 25th swipe of the year, to tie the Bruin single-season record set last year by U.S. Olympian Christie Ambrosi.
Senior Third baseman Julie Adams then reached on an error by Beaver second baseman Brynnen Guthrie, with Freed scoring on the play. Erin Rahn came in to pinch run for Adams, and Rahn and Watley advanced to second and third, respectively, on a Julie Marshall fly out to right field.
The bases became loaded once again when Lyndsey Klein walked, and Tairia Mims was able to single home Watley. Another single by centerfielder Crissy Buck hit home Rahn and Klein before the inning ended on a fly out by left fielder Lupe Brambila.
The Bruins added two more runs in the bottom of the second, when Freed walked, and Watley and Adams both singled to load the bases. Klein then walked home Freed, and Dale hit home Watley on a fielders choice before Mims popped out to end the inning.
UCLA scattered four hits through their next four at-bats, but the final score stayed at 6-1, UCLA. Freed earned the win in the circle, striking out four and allowing one run and four hits, while OSU's Tarrah Beyster took the loss and is now 24-12 on the year.
The Bruins return to the field at Easton Stadium on Saturday for a doubleheader against Oregon, beginning at 2 p.m. It will be senior day for three UCLA players, Julie Adams, Lyndsey Klein and Julie Marshall.
