The UCLA men's volleyball lost in four games to No. 4 Pepperdine Wednesday night at Pauley Pavilion.
The Waves won 30-22, 26-30, 30-28, 37-35 in two hours and five minutes before 501 fans.
Pepperdine improved to 10-1 overall, 8-0 in league play. UCLA fell to 5-7 overall, 2-6 in conference play.
After dropping Game 1 by eight points to the Waves, the Bruins rallied in Game 2 behind the hitting of sophomore opposite Allan Vince, who smacked 10 kills (.643) and aced the Waves twice.
In Game 3, UCLA raced to a 14-7 lead before Pepperdine called its second timeout of the game. The Waves roared back to tie the game at 18-18 and moved ahead 19-18 on a block by Brad Keenan and Sean Rooney. The Waves maintained their edge, taking a two-point lead at 27-25 on a kill by Rooney. Later, Rooney got the game-winner and Pepperdine went ahead two-games-to-one.
In Game 4, UCLA held two five-point leads at 16-11 and 22-17 only to watch Pepperdine tie the score at 24-24 on a series of UCLA mishaps and Pepperdine blocks. With Pepperdine ahead 28-27, a kill by Vince, and a block by Vince and junior Chris Pena gave the Bruins a swing at game point. Vince hit wide to make it 29-29, and the Bruins struck out on three more swings at game point. The Waves finally won on their third try at match point when UCLA's J.T. Wenger hit long.
Vince pounded a career-high 27 kills (.386) after replacing freshman Matt McKinney in Game 2. Pena added 15 (.429), followed by senior Scott Morrow's 11 kills (.588) and three block assists.
Pepperdine's Fred Winters smacked a team-high 22 kills (.422) and served six aces.
The Bruins' next home match is Sat., Feb. 15 vs. USC in the 26th Annual Kilgour Cup. First-serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
