
UCLA Falls in Four to Hawaii

Fourth-ranked Hawaii extended its winning streak to eight matches with a 3-1 victory over No. 9 UCLA at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
The Warriors won 30-25, 30-19, 28-30, 30-24 in two hours and 26 minutes as 4,128 fans watched. The victory raised Hawaii's record to 12-4 overall, 10-3 in MPSF play. The Bruins fell to 12-10, 5-8 in league.
The Bruins never hit better than .275 in any game and were out-blocked 13.0-6.5. In addition, they served just three aces against 15 service errors.
In Games 1 and 2, the Bruins committed a total of 10 service errors and recorded no aces. The also had 14 hitting errors, due in large part to UH's 8.0-2.0 blocking advantage.
In Game 3, the Bruins took a 5-0 lead before Hawaii rallied to tie it 10-10 on a kill by Lauri Hakala. The Warriors maintained a two-point advantage until the Bruins called timeout trailing 27-25. Jose Delgado slammed a kill to give UH a three-point lead before UCLA got the serve back when setter Dennis Gonzalez won a joust. Delgado hit a ball into the net and UCLA's Steve Klosterman and Nick Scheftic combined for a block to tie the score. The Bruins took the lead on a kill by Scheftic and won it on Klosterman's kill off the block.
In Game 4, Hawaii took an early lead at 4-1 and never looked back. Hakala had six kills in this game and the Bruins hit just .079, getting blocked four times and committing four service errors.
Scheftic recorded 14 kills (.444) and five block assists for 16.5 points. Gonzalez, who left the match in Game 4 with a sprained ankle, recorded five kills (.833), an ace and one block assist. No other UCLA player hit better than .200, although Klosterman recorded 13 kills and senior Damien Scott added 12.
Hakala and Delgado led UH with 18 kills and senior Matt Cerare added 14 (.345). Hawaii hit. .313 for the match, including .389 in Game 1.
The two teams meet Saturday at 7 p.m. HST.
