Fourth-ranked Hawaii completed a two-match conference sweep of UCLA Saturday in Honolulu. The Warriors won their ninth straight match and solidified their position in second place in the MPSF race.
Hawaii won 30-24, 30-23, 30-28 in front of 4,737 fans in 105 minutes. The victory raised Hawaii's record to 13-4 overall, 11-3 in conference play. UCLA fell to 12-11, 5-9.
Erratic serving and blocking plagued the Bruins as they committed six service errors in each of the first two games and finished with a total of 17 against just two aces. The Bruins were out-blocked 9.0-3.0. Hawaii served four aces against 13 errors.
Despite hitting .432 in Game 3, UCLA just couldn't get over the hump. They led 8-4 and 22-18 and held the Warriors at bay for most of the game before faltering at the end. Hawaii tied the score at 24-24 on a bad set by UCLA freshman Matt Wade. UH moved ahead 27-26 on a kill by Lauri Hakala, then increased its lead by two when Matt Carere and Dio Dante blocked UCLA freshman Sean O'Malley. A kill by junior Steve Klosterman closed the gap to one point, but Carere's kill gave the Warriors a 29-27 advantage. UCLA's Nick Scheftic put down a kill, but Carere got the game-winner on the next serve.
Klosterman and O'Malley led the Bruins with 10 kills each. O'Malley hit .438 in a relief role of senior Damien Scott, who was held to five kills. Wade, filling in for the injured Dennis Gonzalez, recorded 42 set assists. Junior Paul George added nine kills (.375) and an ace.
Hakala led the Warriors with 16 kills (.538) and Carere added 12 (.385) to go along with two aces and on block assist.
