Madison, Wisc. - The 14th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team dropped its second match of the weekend at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Saturday, as the Bruins were edged by No. 18 Clemson, 4-3 in a consolation match at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. With the loss, UCLA falls to 3-2 overall, while the Tigers improve to 4-1.
UCLA, which lost all three doubles matches for the first time this season, put up a valiant fight in singles play. After junior Elizabeth Lumpkin tied the match at 1-1 with a three-set victory over Selma Babic at court No. 6, the Tigers won the next two matches to take a 3-1 lead. The Bruins, however, cut the lead to 3-2 when Tracy Lin recorded a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Ina Hadziselimovic at court No. 3.
With Clemson leading 3-2, the Bruins needed to win both remaining matches to pull off the victory. Riza Zalameda was up a set and heading into a second-set tiebreaker at court No. 1, while Alex McGoodwin, who lost the first set, was tied at 4-4 in the second set at court No. 5. Before Zalameda could pick up the win, however, McGoodwin fell in a close second set, dropping a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Maria Brito. Zalameda, who lost the second set tiebreaker, ended up winning her match 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
UCLA returns home to host Fresno State on Feb. 9. That match begins at 1:30 p.m.
