Junior Kent Morikawa and senior Shannon Murakami highlighted the men's and women's cross country teams on Saturday at the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, IN as both were the No. 1 runners for their respective squads.

Morikawa, who has been a point scorer for the team throughout the season, finished as UCLA's top runner for the first time in his career. He finished 29th overall in a time of 24:14.2. Murakami continued her streak as the women's top runner as she placed 33rd in a time of 20:53.7.

The men finished 11th overall out of 35 teams, vastly improving upon their performance in 2009 when they finished 23rd overall. The women's team finished 19th overall out of 38 teams. They did not compete at this meet in 2009, but were 25th in 2008.

Freshman Nohe Lema was the No. 2 runner for the men, placing 67th in a time of 24:37.5. Senior Jake Matthews was the No. 3 runner (74th, 24:40.0), while juniors Spencer Knight (99th, 24:54.7) and David McDonald (106th, 24:58.0) rounded out the Bruins' top five finisher at the meet.

On the women's side, freshman Sierra Vega finished 61st at the No. 2 runner for UCLA (21:22.5). Fellow frosh Melissa Skiba was 119th (21:49.0) in the No. 3 spot. Senior Kelcie Wiemann was the No. 4 runner, placing 122nd (21:52.3) and freshman Shannon Murakami was the final scorer for the women, placing 193rd in a time of 22:33.7.

The men's and women's teams will next compete at the Titan Invitational in Fullerton on October 23.
