The men's cross country team finished first in their 2012 season opener at the Nevada Chase in Reno, Nevada. The women, also running Friday in Reno, placed third.

The handicapped style event--a race in which the lowest-ranked athletes start first and are followed by groups of higher-ranked individuals on intervals--ended with the Bruin men claiming the top three spots, and all seven competing Bruin runners finished in the top ten. Daniel Herrera, the Cerritos transfer, shined in his Bruins debut and took first place in the 6k with a time of 15:48. As a team, they combined for a total of 19 points and finished 21 points ahead of second place UC Riverside whose scoring total was 40 on Friday. Second place finisher Sergey Sushchikh also ran well for the Bruin men in his UCLA debut, coming off a redshirt year last season with a time of 15:58.

On the women's side, senior captain Katja Goldring led the way for all runners in the 4k with a time of 11:49. The women's team finished with a total score of 50, eleven points behind second place UC Riverside. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Smith also came in with a strong fourth place finish at 12:08.

Before returning to Westwood, the cross country team will travel to Mammoth Lakes, CA for a two-week high altitude training program. They resume competition on September 21 as they host the Pac-12 Preview at Robinsons Ranch Golf Course in Santa Clarita, CA.
