CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Bruins won one and lost one on Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, defeating Ohio State 8-0 in six innings before falling to #8 Florida State 5-1.
In game one against the Buckeyes (9-2), the Bruins (12-3) recorded 13 hits spread across nine different players. Seniors Gracie Goulder and Stephany LaRosa, junior Allexis Bennett and freshman Kylee Perez each had a pair of hits.
In the circle, freshman Johanna Grauer improved to 4-0 with her second complete-game shutout of the season, striking out a season-best eight. She struck out two in the third, fifth and sixth innings and one in the first and fourth.
UCLA brought in a pair of runs in its first at-bat. With one out, sophomore Delaney Spaulding doubled to right-center, and one out later, came home on a double by LaRosa to the same spot. Junior Brittany Moeai followed with a single to left to bring in the hard-charging LaRosa from second to make it 2-0.
The Bruins added one more in the second. With two outs, Bennett reached on a bunt single to third and senior Ally Carda doubled her in with a shot down the left-field line to give UCLA a third run.
UCLA tacked on three more in the third. LaRosa led off with a single to left, moved to second on a Moeai sacrifice and scored on a double down the left-field line by Perez to make it 4-0. Freshman Maddy Jelenicki followed with her first career homer, a 230-foot-plus shot to dead center, to extend the advantage to 6-0.
After Ohio State left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings, the Bruins invoked the mercy rule for the second time in as many games. Goulder led off with a single to right and Bennett walked. Both runners then moved up on a wild pitch, and when catcher Cammi Prantl's throw went into shallow left, Goulder scored and Bennett took third. Two outs later, sophomore Jelly Felix singled up the middle to plate Bennett with the Bruins' eighth and winning run.
In the nightcap, the Bruins (12-4) had just three hits, as Jelenicki, LaRosa and Perez accounted for them. In the circle, Carda (6-2) struck out three in five innings, allowing four runs, six hits and two walks. Grauer tossed the last two innings, fanning one and giving up three hits, a run and a walk.
Florida State (10-5) got on the board in the first when Jessica Warren doubled to right with one out and Alex Powers singled to right-center to make it 1-0. The Seminoles added another run in the third. Maddie O'Brien singled up the middle to open the inning, Warren walked, and one out later, Bailey Schinella drew a free pass to load the bases. Victoria Daddis followed with a tapper to short, with Spaulding going to third for an out, as O'Brien scored the Seminoles' second run.
The Bruins cut the deficit in half in the fourth. LaRosa had a one-out double to right-center, and one out later, Perez singled to left-center to make it 2-1.
In the fifth, the Seminoles added two more. Warren had a one-out single up the middle and scored on a double to left-center by Powers to make it 3-1. A Schinella single to right brought in pinch-runner Katie Baker with Florida State's fourth run. The Seminoles tacked on one more in the seventh. With one out and a runner on first, Schinella singled to right-center, as pinch-runner Lauren Harris took third. One out later, Victoria East singled through the left side to bring in Harris to make it 5-1.
