Early Deficit No Problem for #9 UCLA in Comeback Win Over Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. - Sophomore Gabrielle Maurice tied a career high with three hits, senior Gracie Goulder recorded a pair of hits and runs and junior Allexis Bennett drove in two, as the ninth-ranked Bruins won their 15th game in a row in an 8-4 victory over #17 Washington on Sunday at Husky Softball Stadium.
The Bruins improve to 29-5 overall and 5-0 in Pac-12 play, while the Huskies fall to 28-7 and 1-3 in league.
UCLA had 11 hits, coming from eight different players. In the circle, freshman Johanna Grauer (6-0) got the win, tossing 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out one and giving up three walks. Senior Ally Carda recorded her third save of the year, fanning four in 3 2/3 innings and allowing two unearned runs, one hit and two walks. She struck out two in both the fourth and the fifth, posting a 1-2-3 in the fifth. Freshman Selina Ta'amilo started and struck out one in two innings, giving up two runs, two hits and three walks.
Washington scored two runs in the first. With third and second and one out, a Courtney Gano sacrifice fly to left scored Taylor Van Zee with the game's first run. Ali Aguilar then moved to third on a wild pitch and came home one batter later on an infield single to first by Kelli Suguro to make it 2-0.
In the third, the Bruins scored five to take the lead. Goulder led off with a single to left, while Bennett and Carda walked to load the bases. Freshman Kylee Perez followed with a slow chopper to first for an infield hit, as Goulder scored to make it 2-1. A wild pitch by Casey Stangel would score Bennett to even the game, and when Dani Braun's throw back to the plate got away, Carda scampered home to give the Bruins the lead. A double to right-center by sophomore Delaney Spaulding plated Perez with UCLA's fourth run, while a single up the middle by freshman Maddy Jelenicki brought in Spaulding to put the Bruins up 5-2.
UCLA tacked on three more insurance runs in the fifth with a two-out rally. Maurice and junior Brittany Moeai walked, with sophomore Robyn Corruth running for Moeai. A sharp single by Goulder off the UW first baseman's glove scored Maurice to make it 6-2, which was followed by a Bennett double to left-center to plate a pair and extend the lead to 8-2.
Washington scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh, but the Bruins held on for the 8-4 victory.
The Bruins look to finish off the sweep on Monday at 6 p.m. The game will be live on Pac-12 Networks.
