Bruins Fall in Indoor Qualifier

LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The ITA Kick-Off Weekend Indoor Qualifier went down to the wire on Saturday afternoon as the ninth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team fell to No. 54 Fresno State in a 4-3 heartbreaker.? With the win, the Bulldogs advance to the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February.?
The Bulldogs struck first, taking the doubles point.? Fresno State's Anneka and Sophie Watts, the No. 59 doubles team in the nation, cruised past Terri Fleming and Maia Magill, 6-1.? UCLA answered back as Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips registered a 6-3 win on court 1.? A battle for the doubles point ensued on court 3.? Fresno State took a 1-0 lead as Olivia Noble and Sofya Malysheva edged Alaina Miller and Kristin Wiley, 6-4.? ?
In singles play, No. 18 Harrison evened the score at 1-1 with a straight-set win over No. 26 Maiar Sherif Ahmed.? Anneka Watts quickly responded for Fresno State, downing Bruin newcomer Laura Luca in straights to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage.? UCLA and Fresno State then traded a pair of wins on courts 2 and 3 as McPhillips downed her opponent and Wiley fell to hers.? The Bruins trailed the Bulldogs, 3-2.?
The match came down to courts 4 and 5.? On court 5, the Bulldogs' Emma Wilson rallied to force a third set against UCLA's Magill.? Magill eased past Wilson in the third set, however, to tie the match at 3-3.? The match was in the hands of Miller on court 4.? After dropping the first set, 6-2, Miller retaliated with a 6-2 win of her own.? The Bruin freshman was unable to hold on as the Bulldogs' Galina Bykova took the third set, 6-3, earning Fresno State a spot in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc.
Men's Competition
The No. 12 UCLA men's tennis team faces No. 42 Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon at 1:00, with the victor advancing to the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. ?No. 62 New Mexico will take on No. 46 SMU in the consolation match Sunday morning at 10:00. ?
